Eden Gardens: A classy century from Virat Kohli, Five-wicket
hauls from Ishant Sharma and Umesh Yadav powered India to a 2-0 series
clean sweep as they beat Bangladesh by an innings and 46 sides in the historic
day-night Test at Eden Gardens in Kolkata.
This is the first
time a team has recorded four consecutive wins by an innings or more. This is
also India's seventh consecutive Test match win, their longest ever winning
streak. A dogged innings by Mushfiqur Rahim had dragged the match to the
third day, but he needed assistance from the other batsmen if to make India bat
again, that didn’t happen.
Mushfiqur Rahim's
fighting half-century was Bangladesh's only positive as India outplayed the
visitors in all departments. In fact, the match looked like it was headed for a
two-day finish until Mushfiqur and Mahmudullah put up a counterattack. But
Mahmudullah pulled a hamstring and Mushfiqur found himself fast running out of
partners before India cleaned them up.
A Test series
in India is inarguably, the toughest challenge in world cricket at the moment.
It hasn’t been an easy task at any point in this two decade’s and the record of
having lost only two series on home soil since 2001, and none since the start
of 2013 but in the recent past, its shear dominance by Indian team.
Days before
making their short journey into India, Bangladesh had seen South Africa blown
to smithereens. A side that had reached the Indian shores ranked third in the
world had ended a three Test series with margins of defeat reading 203 runs, an
innings and 137 runs and an innings and 202 runs.
There was enough of a margin between
these two sides even before this series started
India world number one, Bangladesh world number nine, but over five days
of cricket at Indore and Kolkata, they have appeared to be playing at different
levels altogether.
Where India’s
batsmen have been dominant and attacked the opposition bowling line-ups, the
challenge for their opponents has been the fiery fast-bowling unit dishing out
some hostile and nasty stuff which was never seen in the Indian cricket history.
Such has been the sheer brilliance of Ishant Sharma, Umesh Yadav and Mohammed
Shami, that Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja have only been called upon
to bowl after almost 23 overs in Indian conditions.
Scorecard:
Bangladesh, 1st innings: 106 (Shadman Islam
29; Ishant Sharma 5-22) and 2nd innings: 195 (Mushfiqur Rahim 74;
Umesh Yadav 5-53, Ishant Sharma 4-56)
India, 1st
innings: 347/9 decl. (Virat Kohli 136, Cheteshwar Pujara 55,
Ajinkya Rahane 51; Al-Amin Hossain 3-91, Ebadot Hossain 3-91)
