Virat Kohli has won nothing as a Leader: Gautam Gambhir

Mumbai: Former India opener Gautam Gambhir, in the latest episode of Cricket Connected on Star Sports, said that current India skipper Virat Kohli at the moment has won nothing as a leader, still has a lot to achieve in his career, especially as a captain.

Despite being regarded as one of the best batsmen in the modern-era, Kohli has been unable to win any major multinational trophy as captain. He has also been unable to lead Royal Challengers Bangalore to an IPL Trophy.

Speaking in the latest episode of Cricket Connected on Star Sports, former India opener Gautam Gambhir said that Virat Kohli still has a lot to achieve in his career. On being asked if there are still a few milestones left for the 31-year-old, Gambhir replied: “Lots, in a team sport.”

He further added, “You can keep scoring your own runs. There are people like Brian Lara who’s got so many runs. People like Jacques Kallis who have won nothing, Virat Kohli, at the moment, has won nothing to be honest, as a leader. You can keep scoring those big runs but according to me, till you win those big trophies you will never be able to fulfil your entire career,"

"What sets you apart from being a good player to being a very very good player in a team is what you do on those crucial games," said Gambhir.

Kohli's tactics as a captain have often been questioned by the greats of the game. Several former cricketers have slammed the current Indian skipper for not backing young players enough. Gambhir has also in the past questioned Kohli's credentials as captain in the Indian Premier League (IPL) where he is yet to win a title with Royal Challengers Bangalore.

Since the 2013 Champions Trophy triumph under MS Dhoni, India have failed to win a single ICC tournament despite making it to the final four on each occasion. India made it to the finals of the 2017 Champions Trophy, which they lost to arch-rivals Pakistan, Two years later India suffered a heart breaking Semi-Final loss to New Zealand in the World Cup 2019.
