Despite KL Rahul's paltry records, Kris Srikkanth defended him?

India vs Australia 2020 Squad: Former India cricketer and chairman of selectors Kris Srikkanth does not agree with Sanjay Manjrekar for questioning KL Rahul's inclusion in the Test squad, saying Manjrekar cannot 'think beyond Bombay'.

When Anirudha, Srikkanth's son and host of a show, pointed out that Manjrekar had a point in showcasing Rahul's inconsistency, Srikkanth said Rahul has a century in Australia and is a good player of fast bowling.

But Really? Srikkanth didn't dug in the facts before quoting KL Rahul is a good player.

Lets look at KL Rahul's numbers in Australia playing Test cricket, 9 Innings 187 runs at an average of 20.78. Even the last time India toured Australia in 2018, KL Rahul's performance was substandard. KL Rahul played 5 innings in 2018 Australia series and scored 57 runs at an average of 11.40. Did Kris Srikkanth defend KL Rahul on these performances? Or just one hundred back in 2015 justify his Test place in the squad in 2020?

Sanjay Manjrekar was not hesitant when he said it was a bad precedent to recall Rahul to the Test side based on IPL form, where he is currently the highest run scorer. Infact it seems KL Rahul is being picked in the side only on the basis of 'Favoritism'. Him being a good friend with the Indian Captain Virat Kohli and Anushka Sharma the latter's wife.

No wonder the influence of friendship between the Captain and the player(KL Rahul) can be seen in selection process. Where other players are discarded after few failures while those with good friendships with the Captain are given a longer rope.

As an Indian captain the criteria for selection and exclusion should be same to every single player irrespective of the relationships you have off the field. But seems like Indian cricket today are in the hands of a 'Favoritism Captain'.

If the BCCI and the officials, won't consider reviewing such issues in the national team, soon this will aggravate and have consequences of its own, with the fans and even with the sacking of the team Captain.

  1. Rohit was backed by Dhoni for 6 years in ODIs, was that because he's Dhoni's friend? Or is that because Rohit was very talented batsman+ scored runs in IPL + scored HUGE RUNS in First Class Cricket?
