Mumbai: The Indian opening batsman Shikhar Dhawan injured his left knee while playing for Delhi in the Super League game against Maharashtra in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. The Hindu reports that while Dhawan is ruled out, Sanju Samson to take his place in the Indian squad.
According to the report, Dhawan injured his left knee while playing for Delhi in a match against Maharashtra in the first Super League match of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy tournament at Surat. The incident occurred when the batsman attempted a full-stretch dive while batting, and a piece of wood from his pad pierced his knee. The batsman later received multiple stitches.
The injury is said to be similar to what Shane Watson suffered during the IPL 2019 final between Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians earlier this year.
Management believes that Dhawan won’t recover in time for the T20I series. Samson would finally hope of getting some match-time in the three T20I series, after he was left out of the squad earlier. He was a part of the T20I squad against Bangladesh, but was unfortunate to not play even a single game.
The injury to Dhawan came in the most inappropriate time, as he has been struggling to find form and momentum to establish himself as an opener in the shortest format.
Dhawan's poor form continued in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, where he scored 87 runs in five matches.
Team India will take on West Indies in a T20I series starting from December 6 at Hyderabad.
