Melbourne, Australia: Cricket Australia on Thursday laid off the majority of its staff till June 30 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. But Cricket Australia looked hopeful of the World T20 later in October-November, followed by the India tour of Australia at the end of the year.
"The impacts on the sports industry of the coronavirus pandemic are bigger than any one sport" CA said.
Recently ICC teased the idea of delaying the World T20 if necessary, with IPL currently being suspended indefinitely with the COVID-19 outrage. If the World T20 is delayed or postponed, IPL might take that slot instead.
Cricket Australia has shown positive indications to conduct World T20 in Australia with empty stadiums to prevent any Corona Virus threats.
Also Cricket authorities are trying to find ways to manage health and safety of the visiting teams if India’s 2020-’21 tour of Australia goes ahead as planned.
Adelaide Oval’s new hotel could be offered to the visiting Indian cricket team as a potential quarantine centre during its upcoming tour of Australia at the end of 2020, which is currently under threat due to the rapidly-spreading Covid-19 pandemic.
According to a report, South Australian Cricket Association chief Keith Bradshaw has reached out to Cricket Australia boss Kevin Roberts to offer the new $42 million hotel for use by Indian team if it is allowed into the country.
However, the 138-room Oval hotel, which is expected to open in September, would enable “the world No.1 Test nation to train in first-class cricket facilities at the adjacent nets as well and give them access to suitable dining and nutrition options.”
The cancellation of the Tests against India could cost CA potentially up to $300 million in loss TV revenue.
