Rohit Sharma ends 2019 by surpassing a 22 year old record | IND v WI 2019

Cuttack: Team India won their last ODI series of this decade with a late cameo from Shardul Thakur and Ravindra Jadeja helped India chase down 316 vs West Indies after the fall of Virat Kohli in the 47th over. Overall it has been a brilliant decade for Team India. But the year 2019 surely belonged to Rohit Sharma.

India opener Rohit Sharma got past India captain Virat Kohli as the highest run-getter of 2019 in ODIs. Rohit, scored 1,490 runs from 28 ODI matches this year, while Kohli finished with 1,377 runs from 26 matches. Windies Shai Hope has the third-highest ODI runs in 2019 as he finished with 1,345 runs from 28 matches.

With the last match of the decade Rohit also broke Sri Lanka’s Sanath Jayasuriya’s 22-year-long record of scoring the most international runs as an opener in a calendar year.  Rohit aggregated 2442 runs with 10 hundreds across formats and as many half centuries in the year, averaging 53.08 in 47 innings.

Virat Kohli finished 2019 on a high, leading India's chase in the series-decider against the West Indies with a fine knock of 85 runs off 81 deliveries. In the process, the India captain ensured that he finished as the leading run-getter across all formats in the year with 2,455 runs. Rohit Sharma, who also scored a half-century in the third ODI against West Indies, finished a close second with 2,442 runs. Rohit Sharma did, however, end the year as the leading run-scorer in ODIs.

“Extremely grateful for the year I’ve had. A World Cup victory would have been nice, but as a team, throughout the year, whether red ball or white ball cricket, we came together really well. Personally I’ve enjoyed batting, but there’s no way I’m stopping. There’s an exciting year coming up,” Rohit said after the match.
